50 years ago: Three thrown from car in Richville accident

50 years ago

-Lyle H. Simons, 15, drowned in Big McDonald Lake Sunday when he fell from a boat while fishing with his 12-year-old brother.

-Three young women, all from St. Paul, were injured Wednesday when their Volkswagen rolled over near Richville. The top of the vehicle was torn off and all three were thrown out. The car was a total wreck.

-The Land O’ Lakes dry milk plant laid off 25 employees Saturday for an indefinite period. Many are taking vacation pay. Length of the plant shutdown cannot be determined.

-Genevieve Ann Aho, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Aho, was one of a class of 86 student nurses who were recently capped at Swedish Hospital School of Nursing.

-Geneva Hietala was crowned queen of the EOT county dress revue at the fair. Her attendant was Rachel Raatikka. Princesses were Cynthia Mattfeld, Patty Arvidson, Renee Krueger and Bonnie Sieling.

-Katrina Marie Perala, daughter of Sp/5 and Mrs. Robert Perala, was baptized July 8 at Trinity Lutheran church. She was born April 7, 1962 at Holloman Air Force Base, Alamogordo, New Mexico.

-The fundraiser for the Perham Area Community Center has reached the 60% mark, according to Steering Committee Chairman Ken Nelson, totaling $871,588 early this week.

-Amber Shaw of Richville was last week’s winner in the Perham Turtle Races. The Shaws apparently have some secret to unleashing the speed of the hardshells, as her brother Shawn was the previous week’s winner.

-[Photo] One calf for everybody – There were enough calves for everybody to hold with Steve and Annette Gorentz and their 4-year-old son Jonathan each holding one of the triplet calves born last Thursday. Veterinarian Bill Rose had only seen 3 sets of triplets in 12 years.

-EOT 4-H Winners- Jason Bauck, champion ewe; Monica Sonnenberg, champion wether, Champion heavyweight and champion lightweight; Brian Schermerhorn, champion grade ewe; Danny Sonnenberg, champion beef heifer; Shari Bjorklund, reserve champion beef steer; and Marc Bjorklund, champion steer.

-Overall winners at the 4-H Fashion and Project Review were Ruth Schwartz, purchased garment; Jenny Paurus, fashion review; and Shanna Tigges, constructed garment.

-Senior Citizen News; We enjoyed some violin music by “little” Becky Becker on Friday. Thank you Becky, we enjoyed that.
